Back in the Saddle!

Tomorrow we return to “normal” operations here at The Gondola Project. Having just returned from a month-long sabbatical from the site I’m hoping to be refreshed, renewed and reinvigorated.

Thanks so much to Julia, Nick and Ryan for keeping the site going while I was away and thanks to all the readers who stuck with the site!

– Steven Dale.

The Month Ahead

As I mentioned last week, I will be taking a ~ 1 month hiatus/vacation from The Gondola Project starting today. In my place will be Nick Chu, Julia Padvoiskis and Ryan O’Connor. Here’s how your weeks will pan out for the next month:

MONDAYS. Info-graphic by Julia Padvoiskis. An attempt to resurrect our ill-fated “cablegraph” concept.

TUESDAYS. A brief piece by Steven Dale, just for continuity’s sake.

WEDNESDAYS. Guest post by either Nick Chu or Ryan O’Connor.

THURSDAYS. Guest post by either Nick Chu or Ryan O’Connor.

FRIDAYS. As an attempt to facilitate and ease communication between our nascent forum and The Gondola Project proper, Julia Padvoiskis will introduce a weekly feature called “Forum Fridays” which will give readers an update about what’s been going on in the forums and what topics need more help from regular Gondola Project readrs.

SATURDAYS. As always, Saturdays will remain a Weekly Roundup of a few highlights from around the world of Urban Gondolas and Cable Propelled Transit.

SUNDAYS. Sundays are officially Nick Chu’s day for his Sunday Morning Stats. No reason to change that.

Wanted: Guest Posts

Starting next week, I will be taking a summer hiatus from The Gondola Project for one month. That doesn’t mean, however, that the site will be out of commission. Daily posts will continue and you can expect to see the following:

  • Pre-written and scheduled posts by me, Steven Dale.
  • Weekly Roundups and Sunday Stats will continue as always.
  • Guest posts by Gondola Project contributors Ryan O’Connor, Nick Chu and Julia Padvoiskis.

To help round out the four weeks, we’d love to see a handful of guest posts by Gondola Project readers. Such posts could involve:

  • Profiles of systems not-yet-discussed on The Gondola Project.
  • Advocacy pieces for (or against) proposed urban gondola systems.
  • Conceptual urban gondola lines for cities around the world.
  • Commentary on Cable Propelled Transit – its merits and its faults.
  • Anything transit-related.

If you’re interested, send us an email at gondola (at) creativeurbanprojects (dot) com.

The Gondola Project at the 1.5 Year Mark

As of last month The Gondola Project has been around for 1.5 years. In the next 6 months there’s going to be a lot of changes to the site. Admittedly, we don’t know exactly what those changes will look like, but we know things need to evolve and be shaken up.

Nevertheless, we thought it might be nice to share with Gondola Project readers a few statistics about the site in order to get a feel for how we’ve been doing:

  • 75,000 total visits (since inception).
  • 180,000 total pageviews (since inception).
  • 45,000 absolute unique visitors (since inception).
  • 22,000 absolute unique visitors (in the last 6 months).
  • 5,000 absolute unique visitors per month (current).

For a tiny little website premised on the absurd notion of using ski lifts as public transit, I think that’s not too shabby.

Urban Gondola Transit Technology Revisions: BDG

As we move into the slow summer months, we thought it appropriate to take the time and make revisions to the various lessons, modules and primer pieces available on The Gondola Project. The revisions we’re making correct some of the errors and omissions that resulted from creating an online primer text using 20 year old literature to understand a technology that virtually no one actually understands.

Particularly as some of these posts are a-year-and-a-half old (has it really been that long?), we felt it essential to review materials and make sure that what we said then matches what we know now.

As such, we’re trying our best to use the most current and accurate information and data we can get our hands on. At the same time, opinions in the industry vary greatly about what the variety of cable transit technologies can and cannot do and these opinions are often in opposition to one another.

Therefore, please understand that The Gondola Project is meant solely as a guide and should not be relied upon as a lone source of information.

If there are any pages or posts you’d like to see revised, corrected or revisited, please send us an email at gondola (at) creativeurbanprojects (dot) com, or leave us a comment below.

The first revision we’ve made is our BDG Module, which we feel was the primer text most in need of revisions, updates and corrections.

The Gondola Project In Your City

One thing we’ve noticed over the last year or so is that city-specific content rules.

It’s all fine and well for us to talk generally about urban gondolas and cable-propelled transit, but it’s not until ideas specific to a given city are put forward that people really start paying attention.

That doesn’t apply simply to this site either. Once concepts and ideas are put forward for a city in specific, conversation is spurred by virtue of the fact that locals know their city better than anyone else.

So here’s an idea we’ve been toying with and want Gondola Project readers to voice their opinions on:

What if we created city-specific Gondola Project pages? Places where, for example, our Toronto gondola system could be analyzed, changed, debated and promoted. Or Brian’s Pittsburgh concept. Or Ryan’s Palmerston North proposal.

We could even produce city-specific pages to follow actual projects, such as the St. Louis gondola, Burnaby Mountain proposal in Vancouver, or even the London Cable Car (gondola).

What do people think? Is this a worthwhile endeavor?

Feel free to post your thoughts in the comments section (and be as harsh and honest as possible) and/or send us an email at gondola (at) creativeurbanprojects (dot) com.
