Weekly Roundup: All Aboard The Hogwarts Express

Should I be embarrassed to admit that I didn't even know such a thing as a Howarts Express even existed? Image by flickr user eefeewahfah.

A quick look at some of the highlights from around the world of Urban Gondolas, Gondola Transit, and Cable Propelled Transit:

Here’s something we bet you never (and we mean never) would’ve expected to read: The website Screamscape is reporting that Cable Transit manufacturer Doppelmayr will build a Harry Potter-themed Hogwarts Express for Universal Studios Florida.

The notoriously unreliable Ngong Ping 360 is shut shut down indefinitely due to further safety concerns.

A russian inventor proposes an aerial tramway for the city of Dnipropetrovsk.

The Squamish Sea-to-Sky gondola passes another hurdle on its way to being realized.

But back to this whole Hogwarts Express thing: I’ve never read the Harry Potter books and only saw one of the movies . . . but I still think this is kinda’ pretty awesome. We’ll come back to this next week.

Weekly Roundup: A Cable Car Gift For Sarajevo

A couple highlights from around the world of Urban Gondolas, Gondola Transit, and Cable Propelled Transit:

The community of Grächen, Switzerland gives a cable car to the City of Sarajevo so that it may rebuild the Trebevic Cable Car that was destroyed during the conflict of the early 90’s.

Squamish, British Columbia’s Sea to Sky Gondola moves one step closer to reality.

While not urban, this is certainly an interesting development: The SkiLink gondola project will link the Canyons and Solitude resorts in Utah. The project is intended solely as a transportation system between the two resorts and is expected to “reduce ski season traffic through Big Cottonwood Canyon by as much as 18,000 cars per year. Initially that means around 1 million fewer miles driven per year.” Should be an interesting one to follow.

Apparently former London Mayor Ken Livingstone once rejected current London Mayor Boris Johson’s controversial plans for a Thames Cable Car. As regular readers of this site know, the London Cable Car has been subject to some controversy but began construction earlier this year with the hope it will be complete in time for next year’s Summer Olympics.

Weekly Roundup: London Thames Cable Car Budget Revised – Again

A few highlights from around the world of Urban Gondolas, Gondola Transit, and Cable Propelled Transit:

The budget for the London Thames Cable Car has now increased to £60m. Originally estimated to cost £25m, the budget was revised just recently to £45m. This could quickly become one of the most expensive gondola systems the world’s ever seen.

Local residents in LA suggest using an Aerial Tram to ferry tourists to the Hollywood Sign.

Students from Simon Fraser University proclaim their support for the Burnaby Mountain Gondola.

British Columbia’s Sea-to-Sky Gondola is meeting with less resistance the project promoters expected.

New Jersey’s Medowlands Sports Complex mulls a new connection to a nearby rail link. Among the technologies under consideration are an urban gondola.

Squamish, British Columbia’s Sea to Sky Gondola takes a step towards reality.

Canada’s national newspaper, The Globe and Mail gives a brief shout out to gondolas and cable cars as a “creative solution for traffic congestion.”
