- This article explores the positive impact that cable cars have had on the Colombian city of Medellín. Previously considered one of the world’s most dangerous places, the story says today it is considered one of the world’s most innovative, in large part to its transportation system. The first cable car line opened in 2004, connecting people in hard-to-reach areas with opportunities. One tour guide describes the cable car system as “an innovative solution to the problems of geographic and economic exclusion.”
- Three new ski lifts are opening this winter in one of Georgia’s most popular ski resorts. Last year 10 gondolas were added to the Bakuriani ski lift, increasing capacity by approximately 400 tourists per hour.
- In another tourist focused project, the Grafton Sky Tour opened last week in the U.S. state of Illinois. The aerial lift, featuring both enclosed gondolas and open-air chair lifts, features views overlooking the confluence of the Mississippi and Illinois rivers.
- In Jerusalem, where approximately 3.5 million people visit annually, Israel has approved cable cars to take tourists to key holy sites. A controversial project, objections have come from archaeologists, architects, and Palestinians, among others.
