Weekly Roundup: Places Named Wellington Dominate Cable Car News

A look at Mt. Wellington, Australia, where a planned aerial gondola is on hold due to Aboriginal heritage requirements.

  • The Wellington Cable Car is celebrating its 119th anniversary with some facts and history. Construction of the funicular began in 1899 and opened to the public in 1902. The system was replaced in 1979 with the current design. The system made news in this recent Roundup.
  • The Tanzanian government approved the concept of a cable car on the mountain of Kilimanjaro in Africa. The project was first announced in 2019 to boost tourism and allow children and elderly visitors access to the mountain top. Currently, the project is being handled by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA). TANAPA emphasized approval from the government does not mean the project will be built. Feasibility, environmental and societal impact studies must be completed before government officials fully back the project.
