- The Gatlinburg Aerial Tramway in Tennessee will temporarily close later this month for a multimillion-dollar facelift. The project is estimated to cost $4.5 million. The major updates for the tramway include the replacement of the 1973 track ropes and switching to an AC drive with a variable frequency controller. Cosmetic improvements are also planned for all departments.
- One of Europe’s oldest cable cars, Kasprowy Wierch, is celebrating its 85th birthday. Back in 1936 when the cable car began operating, it was the third-longest system in the world. It was built in 227 days and during peak construction had a thousand people working on-site.
- A funicular is in the planning phase for Stocksbridge, England. It would connect the Fox Valley shopping centre to High Street. The funicular would be a short ride traveling 30 meters at a 30-degree incline.
- The Jasper Skytram in Canada is opening on March 26 with new COVID protocols. Under the new rules, the tram will carry 12 guests compared to the 30 prior to COVID. There are five movable cubicles that will allow multiple groups to ride up together. A seven-and-a-half-minute ride takes folks to the upper station where they can hike to Whistler’s summit for a 360-degree view of six mountain ranges.
