- Japan’s first urban ropeway, Yokohama Air Cabin, opened in April of 2021. The 630-meter ropeway moves passengers from landside Sakuragi to the harbor in five minutes. The system operates using a lithium-ion battery. Cabins are equipped with air-conditioning, LED lights for the nights, and other safety features. Despite the pandemic, Yokohama managed to build a new ropeway attraction and continue to attract visitors from around the world.
- Line 1 of Cablebús in Mexico City is the second most used cable car in Latin America. There have been 56,000 users per day surpassing the 48,000 predicted. Due to social distancing requirements, the capacity per cabin has been reduced from 10 to 6 passengers. See a related Weekly Roundup here.
- Hobart City Council voted against the cable car project for Kunanyi/Mount Wellington. Opposition of the project in Tasmania, Australia was centered around environmental and cultural impacts. Some pointed out the cable car was not the issue, but the large development proposed along with it such as the restaurant and café.
