- Jackson Hole Mountain Resort’s iconic aerial tramway, Big Red, is reopening summer operations on May 21. For the last two years, the tramway has been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tramway brings riders 4,139 vertical feet to the summit of Rendezvous Mountain in just 12 minutes.
- The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway in California was shut down for mechanical reasons for two hours on May 6. An issue was noticed as a car docked in the Valley Station and the tramway was halted for investigation. While no one was in the cabin when it was stopped, many people were stuck at the top of the mountain awaiting a ride back down. The cause is still under investigation.
- Empyrean Skyview Projects in India is planning four to six new ropeway projects over the next five years. Skyview Projects has already experienced much success with the Patnitop ropeway which was designed to support tourism. It cut travel time from 60-minutes by roadway to 15 minutes. The Dehradun-Mussoorie project will be the longest monocable in India, at 5.5 km, and will be among the top five globally. The Yumunotri ropeway, in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, will be 3.8 km and serve the Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage site.
- A gondola has been proposed for Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour, located in New Zealand, by Doppelmayr. The 4.2 km line would go from Wynyard Quarter through Bayswater and end at the Akoranga bus station. Initial discussions have included construction within two to three years at a cost of $200 million. The gondola could potentially also carry cyclists and their bikes.
