Weekly Roundup: From Roads to Heights – New Tourism Infrastructure Coming Soon to Wakan Territory

  • Tender process for consulting services initiated for roadway and cable car in the Wakan territory of Oman. Submissions are due by May 9th, focusing on designs and documents for a gondola and roadway leading up to Wakan. The goal is to determine the basic infrastructure needs to unlock the area’s nature and heritage tourism potential. Wakan has already undergone some improvements, such as terraced gardens and rock steps up to the highest summit. All the improvements have been focused on enriching the overall tourist experience.
  • Gulmarg Gondola hosts over 1 million visitors during the 2023-2024 financial year. The visitation to the gondola has contributed more than Rs 108 Crore ($12.9 million USD) in revenue during the year. The system consists of two end stations, one mid-station, 18 towers, and 108 cabins. The ride takes passengers up to Apharwath Peak, an elevation of 13,058 feet. Tourism officials highlight the importance of the gondola for enhancing the tourist experience and becoming an integral part of what’s considered a complete visitor’s trip.
  • The UBCABLECAR construction has officially begun in Mongolia. The new 4.2-kilometer cable car system will have a capacity of 1,200 to 1,500 passengers per hour (pph). The goal is for this system to reduce traffic congestion and increase public transportation options in Ulaanbaatar. 18 percent of public transportation users will be able to use this system in the west and south regions of the capital.
