Documentary: Cable Cars Designed To Transform Rio

Reader Ray W. shares with us a documentary of Rio’s Urban Cable Car (Teleférico de Alemão). While it’s a little dated (released July 2012), it is interesting to note how the country’s sense of optimism and economic conditions has waned so quickly in just a few years time.

The Psychology of Urban Gondolas

As Rio de Janeiro’s Complexo do Alemao Teleferico finally moves into full service operations, Rio Times Online has a great little column by Michael Kerlin. The column basically questions what transformative, psychological impacts the system may have on the favela residents it services.

Says Kerlin:

“The psychology of the gondolas can also inform smart policies in the future. Without sufficient maintenance, the gondolas could suffer breakdowns and become a source of frustration, at best, or cynicism and embarrassment, at worst. The gondola operators shouldn’t be shy about charging more for the transport. That will help pay for ongoing maintenance, and it will ensure people continue to value the gondolas.”

In other words: An unintended benefit of the gondola would be a city-wide move towards proper preventative maintenance programs both in transport and other civic amenities.

Furthermore:

“If the ridership numbers stay up, perhaps it’s time to speed up gondola investments in other favelas, if the quantitative cost-benefit analysis also comes through positive. If they don’t, then let’s be prepared to double-down on making the gondolas work for Complexo do Alemão residents, and perhaps slow and revamp plans in other areas.”

In other words: We’ve built this thing. It it works, let’s build more. If it doesn’t, let’s figure out why and make it work.

Makes sense to me.

Wherever possible, we only try to use Creative Commons licensed images on this site. As such, it sometimes takes a while for us to get our hands on images of systems we can actually share with people. That was certainly the case with Rio de Janeiro’s Complexo do Alemao Teleférico.

Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento PAC, however, has just recently posted dozens of cc-licensed images of Rio’s Urban Gondola on Flickr and we wanted to share a few of them with you. Take a look:

Weekly Roundup: Rio One Month Anniversary and Thames Cable Car Construction

Time flies! The Rio system is already one month old! Image by Flickr user minplanpac.

Still a relatively sleepy summer for gondola news, but nonetheless, here’s what’s happening this week:

  • Construction has finally started on London’s Thames Cable Car. Don’t cross your fingers too hard for a 2012 Olympic opening, officials reiterate that it’s not part of the Olympic transport plan.
  • A quick overview of Rio cable car system after being in operation for a month. Great discussion on its successes so far and the implications the system may have on future cable installations in Brazil and abroad.
