  • Le Havre, a French city of 250,000, is currently studying the feasibility of building a network of urban cable cars. The report is scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Two to three different alignments are now under examination which would link up places such as Jacques-Monod Hospital, the center of Montivilliers, Jenner, and an industrial area.
  • After seeing the Montjuic Cable Car, Roman Onderka, the mayor of Brno was inspired build an urban cable car in the Czech Republic’s second largest city. The system is proposed to connect the Faculty of Medicine at Bohunice (in the southwest of the city) to the Pisarky tramway (in the northwest of Výstaviště) within 5 minutes. If he is re-elected, he believes the system can be complete in 4 years.

Weekly Roundup: More from England’s Urban Cable Car Aspirations

A quick look at some of the things that happened this week in the world of cable cars, urban gondolas and cable propelled transit:

  • London blogger Diamond Geezer has an excellent analysis of the Emirates AirLine, it’s speed, and prices. It’s a pretty interesting read though I’m not entirely sure that repeatedly calling the system the “Arabfly Dangleway” is either fair or appropriate. Note: you have to scroll down to his June 19th post.

Emirates Air Line to Open June 28

With much speculation happening in the past on whether the Emirates Air Line will open in time for the Olympics, several media outlets have now officially confirmed that the cable car will open to the public on June 28. This is great news as the system will begin operations nearly one month before the Olympics start on July 27.

Fare pricing was also announced: adults using an Oyster Card will fork out £3.20 per ride, while a cash fare will set you back £4.30. For those who plan to use the cable car regularly, a frequent flyer’s pass is available at a cost of £16 for ten trips.

While this system is merely a simple river crossing, it is certainly the most high-profile cable car line in the Western world. The success or failure of the Emirates Air Line may have major ramifications for future urban CPT systems.
