Invisible Transit

Post by hulia-j

Ever wonder what bikers look like when you take away the bike?

They sort of look like people who are learning to ride a broom stick, while falling over…

Upon discovering these works by Chinese photographer, Zhao Huasen, I immediately set off on a Google searching frenzy for other modes of invisible transit. Here’s what I found:

Invisible Mercedes

Invisible car to fool traffic cameras

Invisible pedestrian

Invisible (double-decker) bus

The idea of the invisible bus is interesting because of how it portrays the use of space on our roads — especially as compared to the space used by a single-passenger car. Conversely, the invisible pedestrian is a less-than-subtle representation of how many pedestrians might feel moving about the city.

Invisible bridge -- ok, so not really a transit "mode," but definitely infrastructure related to movement...

But (after the bikes) the invisible bridge is my favorite — an intriguing concept because of how it elegantly hides/camouflages infrastructure within the existing context. The most extreme example of invisible infrastructure, of course, is a subway, although the concept is not always executed as beautifully as it is with this bridge.

Next project, the invisible gondola…
