As something of a transit nerd, it’s been an interesting few days for me being stuck in New York.
Once the immediate danger passed, all you heard about were questions about infrastructure. Power, internet, heating, transit.
New York is the most transit dependent city in North America. And the news perpetually hammered home that point.
Broadcasters, politicians, bureaucrats and news anchors were (and still are) perpetually discussing how the MTA is the lifeblood of the city. It’s the glue that held the city together. It’s essential to the basic functioning of the city in a way that few of us can actually understand.
How often do we hear other North American cities talk about their transit like that?
Shouldn’t we hear more cities talk like that?
(Thanks to Nick and Julia for holding down the fort on The Gondola Project over the last few days – and best wishes to all of those who’ve suffered such terrible losses in the Tri-State Area.)
