World Map Update: More Cable Propelled Transit and Urban Cable Cars

Post by nickchu

The urban cable car industry continues to grow and make headways around the world. In October 2016 alone, 8 new systems were proposed.

To properly reflect the status of Cable Propelled Transit systems, an update to the world urban gondola map has been made.

In relation to Australia, the map needs an update. The proposal for a gondola at Kings Park in Perth has been kicked around for over 20 years, but there is still no serious plan or funding. It’s unlikely it will ever be built.

However the ‘Arthurs Seat Eagle’ gondola just south of Melbourne has been built and opens on 3 December 2016. The only other (non ski) gondola project in Australia that has a good chance of being built is the ‘Mt Wellington Cable Car’ in Hobart. Both these projects have dedicated websites and Facebook pages.

I maintain a website on Australian passenger ropeways, so feel free to email me if you want to check anything. https://www.australianmountains.com/australianskilifts/

Good catch Dave. Thanks! We try to include all proposals unless there’s an announcement that the project is officially over. That of course, can be somewhat subjective at times.

  • Dave Sisson says:

If you really want to list every proposal, then there’s the Mt Wellington proposal in Hobart which will probably be built. Less likely proposals are replacing the Gully chairlift at Falls Creek ski resort with a gondola and building a gondola from the main car park to the town at Mt Buller ski resort. Both are included in their resort master plans. There is also a proposal to build a gondola up Mt Buffalo in the state of Victoria. There are links to all four on my website, or if that’s inconvenient, email me and I will send links to the relevant official websites.

P.S. I see you have liked the Arthurs Seat Eagle gondola on Facebook. Let me know if you want a few paragraphs from me about it’s opening day.
