Weekly Roundup: A New, Technological, Age

The Deva Fortress in Western Romania is upgrading its cable car. A medieval fort, the upgrade aims to attract more tourists to the destination high above the city of Deva.

  • Deva Fortress in Western Romania is upgrading the cable car. The Deva City Hall opened a public bid for design and construction. The improvements are estimated to cost RON 15.7 million (USD $3.8 million) which includes the upgrade of the cable car and modernization of the lower and upper terminals. The new cable car will be able to carry 30 passengers per cabin compared to the 14 passengers currently.

Weekly Roundup: Social Distancing

The Sljeme cable car near Zagreb, Croatia will no longer be as pictured- they’re adding cabins that will accommodate up to 10 people each.

  • Vail Mountain gondola is requiring visitors to mask up. Vail Ski Resort opened up for the summer season with new rules for safe social distancing. Visitors are required to wear masks in all indoor spaces, including gondolas. The resort is continuing to work on how to improve safety for employees and visitors for the busy winter season.
  • The Singapore Cable Car is now serving dinner. In an effort to promote local tourism, the cable car company has seven iconic Singaporean dishes that can be enjoyed in the cabins for just $55. The private cabins are a great social distancing method and a new experience.

Weekly Roundup: Pollution Solutions

Budapest Hungary is looking at a funicular to reduce congestion and air pollution for Gellért Hill. Budapest already has the pictured funicular, now 150 years old and a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Buda Castle Hill Funicular.

Budapest’s government is supporting a funicular for Gellért Hill. During tourist season, up to 200 buses visit Budapest’s Citadella, built as a military fortress on Gellért Hill, causing constant noise and air pollution. The funicular, with 40-person cabins, is anticipated to reduce congestion through the near elimination of tourist buses.

Steamboat Resort is proposing a gondola that would be North America’s longest and an expansion that would make it the second largest ski resort in Colorado. The proposed eight-person gondola, called the Wild Blue Gondola, would travel 3.16 miles to the summit of Sunshine Peak. The gondola is anticipated to increase capacity to 10,000 people per hour from the current 6,000 people.

A gondola from Banff to Mount Norquay in Canada is still being pursued. The initial proposal was rejected last December due to the negative effects an eco-transit hub would have on the Mount Norquay access road. The scaled back proposal, still trying to combine rail, shuttle service and aerial transit to reduce traffic congestion, is receiving a more positive reception.

Snow King ski resort in Jackson, Wyoming is proposing a gondola and zipline. The project has not had a warm welcome from the locals due to the anticipated increase in noise that will arise with the new attractions. Snow King is narrowing in on details and potential mitigation measures.

Weekly Roundup: Europeans Look to Upgrade Systems

Faloria Mountain in Italy, set to host part of the 2026 Winter Olympics, is planning some environmentally conscious upgrades in preparation for the event.

The new Saanersloch gondola is the first D-Line in Switzerland. Doppelmayr installed the system to replace the old railway built in 1979. Not only did the new D-Line get installed, but the stations are also the first in the world to have a glass panoramic construction.  

As the COVID-19 pandemic decreases in the area, ski lift construction in the Alps increases. Zermatt, Switzerland is continuing forward with their plan to improve its lift system which has 10-person cabins with heated seats. In the Dolomites of Italy, construction is beginning for a new gondola. It is anticipated the gondola will be completed by December, just in time for the Alpine Ski World Championships. Paradiski, France is looking forward to a new 10-person gondola that can carry 3,000 people per hour.

The Faloria cableway in Italy is set to have a green renovation. With the 2026 Winter Olympics scheduled there, the system is looking to lessen its environmental impacts and will install an electric transmission system. The original system was built in 1939 with three stations. The renovations will include the redesign and construction of the stations and four cable cars.
