- United Airlines is “flying” guests to the slopes. United began a service that will combine flying and a shuttle to get guests to Breckenridge Ski Resort. The comprehensive travel service is starting in Denver because of the number of ski resorts and second homes relatively close to the airport.
- Telluride Mountain Village Owner Association (TMVOA) was recognized for two new additions that will directly serve disabled skiers. TMVOA added a fully accessible van to the Dial A Ride program and an adaptive skier button to access the gondola. The button calls for a gondola operator who will assist the skier in and out of the gondola. Previously adaptive skiers had to use a chair with a tricky load ramp or one without a retaining bar.
- The Istanbul fire department recently practiced evacuating the Eyüp-Piyer Loti Cable Car in Turkey. The event was documented with captivating pictures of the firefighters harnessed onto the haul rope. Although cable cars are one of the safest forms of transportation, it is common practice to hold evacuation drills.
- After the second round of public engagement, Translink selected the shortest alignment as the preferred route for the Burnaby Mountain Gondola. Travel time will be six minutes, with cabins departing every minute. The cabins will be able to carry 35 people each, totaling an ability to move 25,000 people daily up the mountain. The capital and annual operational costs are $120 million and $5.6 million respectively. See a related Weekly Roundup here. SCJ Alliance, the parent company of the Gondola Project, has been retained to provide gondola expertise for this project.
