Three Million Trips Aboard Berlin’s IGA 2017 Gondola

During its 6-month run, Berlin’s IGA 2017 urban gondola provided green and barrier-free transport to a total of three million riders. During peak periods, the 3,000-person capacity ropeway recorded more than 35,000 passengers per day. Designed and operated by LEITNER Ropeways, the 10-passenger monocable urban gondola soared to heights of 30m and allowed visitors to admire the 100+ hectares of garden grounds from the sky.

As the German capital experienced the wettest summer ever recorded, attendance to the International Garden Show was unable to reach the two million visitor target. However, the event was still a success where 1.6 million guests visited the site between April 13, 2017 – October 15, 2017.

The 1.5km, 3-station gondola was a prominent attraction throughout its time during IGA 2017 and after a 40-day break, will resume service on December 1, 2017. The system’s close proximity to Berlin’s “Kienberg-Gärten der Welt” subway station means there is an opportunity for the cable car to provide ongoing service improvements to local transport in the years to come. Ongoing dialogue with City officials will discuss how the ropeway can be integrated with the local transit system.

IGA Berlin 2017 Ropeway Celebrates One Million Riders

Berlin’s 2017 International Garden Show (IGA 2017) cable car has now transported more than one million passengers. This impressive milestone was reached in less than three months of operations after the system was inaugurated on April 13, 2017.

The 10-passenger monocable urban gondola, designed and operated by LEITNER Ropeways, is Berlin’s first aerial lift in 60 years. Since its opening, the system has been huge attraction for guests.

The 65 cabins (6 with transparent floors) on the gondola travels up to 30m above ground throughout the site from Kienbergpark to the “Gärten der Welt”. Tickets for the gondola ride is included as part of the IGA 2017 entrance fee.

A total of 3,000 passengers per hour per direction can be transported onboard the IGA 2017 cable car. Once the exhibition comes to a close on October 15, 2017, the ropeway will continue to operate. The system will function as part of Berlin’s local transport system and provide a direct 4.5 minute connection between the districts of Marzahn and Hellersdorf and the “Kienberg – Gärten der Welt” subway station.

Urban Ropeway in Berlin Opens for IGA 2017

IGA Ropeway. Image from LEITNER Ropeways.

After much anticipation, the urban gondola for Berlin’s 2017 International Garden Show (IGA 2017) has finally opened for passenger service on April 13, 2017. As the investor, builder and operator of the IGA 2017 gondola, LEITNER Ropeways played a pivotal role in helping implement Berlin’s first cable car in 60 years.

With over 5,000 events spread out over 104 hectares, IGA 2017 will function as a platform for intercultural dialogue and innovation. The event is designed with a focus on green urban spaces and culture, making the gondola a perfect fit for the horticultural exhibition.

Gondola technology not only has a low footprint on the environment, it offers near silent operations with 100% barrier-free access. Passengers aboard the ropeway’s 65 ten-person cabins soar to heights of 25-30m.

The 1.5km system is built over three stations, with a connection to the City’s “Kienberg-Gärten der Welt”  subway station. From here, passengers are flown across the exhibition grounds to the top of Kienberg (102m) near the “Wolkenhain” observation platform. Visitors can disembark at the intermediate station or they can remain onboard as the cable car continues to travel through to the exhibition’s central area.

With a capacity of 3,000 pphpd, the estimated 2 million visitors to IGA 2017 will have stress-free, and convenient transport throughout the site. After six months, the exhibition will come to an end on October 15, 2017. However, the urban cable car will continue to operate as a vital transit and tourist link for locals and visitors alike.

The system will provide a quick and sustainable 4.5 minute aerial ride to the subway for residents living in the Marzahn and Hellersdorf districts. The Berlin cable car is another example of LEITNER Ropeways growing presence in the urban transport market. Berlin’s Urban Ropeway Chugging Along (International Horticultural Exhibition / IGA 2017)

Exactly one year today, the International Horticultural Exhibition/IGA 2017 (German: Internationale Gartenausstellung 2017) in Berlin, Germany will begin.

To meet the upcoming deadline, construction work on the event and its cable car system has made significant headways. Just last month the gondola lift, built by LEITNER Ropeway, broke ground and yesterday, online media suggests that a half dozen towers have already been erected.

Photos from ski and rail forums in Germany confirm that civil and station infrastructure works is well underway.

The 1.5km, 3 station urban cable car will be connected to the city’s U5 subway. This will not only enhance the system’s integration with rapid transit but also improve sustainable transport options for visitors.

For those who wish to continue tracking the system’s construction, you might not want to blink.

By the end of April, electromechanical components for the stations and towers are planned for completion. Subsequently, the cable will be strung and the cabins will be mounted. If there aren’t any bumps in the road, system testing will begin in the summer!

This incredibly quick turn around time is definitely a reminder of the speeds that are possible for urban gondola construction — a massive advantage for cities looking to install and improve their urban transport systems in a short period of time.

If you happen to live in or pass by Berlin, free tours of the construction site are offered every third Thursday of each month. And believe it or not, a live webcam is installed on site so fans worldwide can follow along from the comforts of their own home. Super cool!

The launch of Germany’s biggest urban cable car project for the Berlin IGA 2017 (English: International Horticultural Exposition) will take place on March 16.

To celebrate this ground breaking event, LEITNER Ropeways will be on site with Berlin’s Mayor, Michael Müller.

The 1.5km urban ropeway was awarded to the South Tyrolean manufacturer in 2014 and will be the first cable car system in Berlin in 50 years.

Not only will the cable car allow visitors to experience the horticultural expo from a spectacular aerial perspective, it will also improve accessibility to 100 hectares of event grounds.
