Track Replacement Time Lapse

Post by admin

Ken Murphy spent 3 1/2 days taking one photo approximately every 15 seconds of the San Francisco streetcar track replacement occurring outside his house. The following is the mind-blowing result:

this is exactly why we need to end the war on cars. imagine this work happening on all of Toronto’s light rail corridors. we’d b stuck in traffic for eternity!

For anyone not following Toronto mayoral politics (and God bless you if you aren’t): Toronto’s embroiled in a heated mayoral campaign that has been going on for at least the last 3 years. One leading candidate – Ford4Mayor – believes all streetcars should be eliminated from Toronto. Apparently this video is evidence in support of that position – at least for this campaigner.

While I am decidedly undecided about who I’d vote for in this election, what I will say is this: The commenter’s argument rests on the idea that rebuilding LRT lines will cause everyone to be stuck in traffic for eternity. However, roads need to be rebuilt, fixed, maintained and repaired far more often than LRT tracks do. By that reasoning, shouldn’t we outlaw roads?

Toronto’s current election campaign is completely devoid of nuance – on all fronts. This campaigner’s comment only reinforces that point.

If Roncesville had been worked on this quickly the construction would have been over ages ago. Cars, streetcars, bikes, pedestrians, residents and businesses all suffered. Similarly, construction on Bloor, just north of the CBD took forever as well, and there were no streetcar tracks present before or afterwards. Still this caused gridlocked for a long expanse of busy roadway.

Regarding Ford; he wants to take away streetcars and add subways. Okay, I see the point, BUT the streetcars are all downtown and the proposed subway is in the northern inner burbs. These are two completely different populations effected in two completely different ways. Apples and oranges, folks. The way he’s planning this, one doesn’t replace the other.
