What Would Banning Cars in LA Look Like?

Post by Steven Dale

According to a team of architecture students from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo an LA without cars would look very, very different (no kidding). It might even involve a few urban gondolas (at the 5:20 through till the 7:20 mark):

  1. cool video, awesome idea. while i'm not familiar with the area, but i wonder where the parking would go and if this could lead to a decline in use of the downtown core. actually i've heard that there really is no downtown LA because it is so spread out ... ? so i wonder if this car ban would just cause businesses, etc to move to "another" downtown-like area in the city. people can be stubborn. and people love their cars.
  2. If you really want to change peoples driving habits do away with zoning laws that require a certain amount of parking. Or possibly set a maximum amount of parking. Or give companies incentives to develop their parking lots into store fronts or office space. And ban parking on the street in most areas. All of a sudden people will find that it is much more convenient to to take the different transit networks than to drive.
