- Renderings of the proposed gondola from Union Station to Dodger Stadium have been released. Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Los Angeles Aerial Rapid Transit (LA ART) are working together on the proposed gondola that will be able to transport 5,500 people per hour per direction with a total travel time of about 7 minutes. LA ART is expecting the environmental review and approvals to be completed by 2022, allowing construction to begin as early as 2025 and be operational for the 2028 Summer Olympics. SCJ Alliance is part of this project.
- The Sljeme Cable Car in Croatia is in its final phases of construction and is expected to open on November 1, 2020. The 5 km cable car will have 84 10-person cabins and the capacity to transport 1,500 passengers per hour. The ride to the upper station will take approximately 16 minutes. The system is equipped with various safety and luxury features, such as video surveillance and heated seats. Tickets are expected to cost around 50 kuna ($7.73 USD).
- All aerial transit systems have strict safety plans, but rarely is there an opportunity to see it in action. The Moscow Cable Car in Russia was conducting rescue drills on Monday, September 21, 2020 and images were taken of the drill. The system travels across the Moskva River which requires boats for rescue drills.
- Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is planning a cable car as part of their master plan to convert Giza into the capital of world tourism. The cable car will link the Grand Egyptian Museum and the Pyramids Plateau. The cable car will also connect the Pyramids Plateau to some important hotels. A series of studies are being conducted to ensure the cable car will not disrupt archaeological sites.
- Route 1 for the Burnaby Mountain Gondola in Canada appears to be the preferred alignment option. Simon Fraser Student Society published a report that stated 84% of Simon Fraser University (SFU) students preferred Route 1. Route 1 is a 2.7 km alignment with a direct connection from Production Way to the SFU campus. TransLink will be submitting their final report with the official route option to the Burnaby Council and the Mayor’s Council on Regional Transportation later this year. See the previous Weekly Roundup here. SCJ Alliance is part of this project.
- The Kopaonik ski resort gondola lift construction project in Serbia is ahead of schedule. The 3.7 km gondola lift will cost €27 million ($32 million USD) and connect the villages of Brzece and Mali Karaman. The project is being constructed by Leitner.
